When God Doesn't Make Sense | Joshua 6:1–5
Have you ever wondered why God sometimes asks us to do things that simply don't make sense?
In this powerful and thought-provoking message, “When God Doesn't Make Sense,” Pastor Michael Naylor takes us to Joshua 6:1–5, where God gives Joshua and the Israelites some unusual instructions for conquering the mighty city of Jericho.
Instead of battering rams, ladders, and military strategy, God tells His people to march around the city, blow trumpets, and shout!
It certainly didn't sound like a battle plan.
But God's ways are not always our ways, and His plans don't have to make sense to us to accomplish His purpose.
Throughout this message, Pastor Naylor reminds us of other remarkable moments in Scripture when God's instructions seemed unusual:
- Moses and the Red Sea (Exodus 14): God made a way through the water when there appeared to be no way forward.
- Water Turned into Wine (John 2:1–11): Jesus told the servants to fill ordinary waterpots with water, and a miracle followed.
- Healing the Blind Man (John 9:1–7): Jesus made mud with His saliva, placed it on a blind man's eyes, and told him to wash in the Pool of Siloam.
- Elisha and the Floating Axe Head (2 Kings 6:1–7): A simple stick was thrown into the water, and God caused an iron axe head to float.
- Naaman's Healing (2 Kings 5:1–14): A mighty commander was told to wash seven times in the Jordan River to be cleansed of leprosy. His pride nearly caused him to miss his healing.
What do these stories have in common?
Faith. Trust. Obedience.
Sometimes God asks us to take a step before He reveals what comes next.
Sometimes His instructions challenge our understanding.
And sometimes the greatest obstacle standing between us and obedience isn't the problem in front of us—it's our own desire to understand everything first.
Proverbs 3:5 reminds us:
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” — NKJV
Maybe you're facing your own Jericho today.
A problem that seems impossible.
A prayer that hasn't been answered.
A direction from God that you don't fully understand.
Pastor Naylor reminds us that we don't have to understand God's plan completely to trust the One who made it.
